Speaker: David Gangemi. This presentation will focus on the results of an NIH funded human clinical trial designed to evaluate chemically defined constituents of Echinacea on prevention of rhinovirus infection and reduction of the symptoms associated with the common cold. The chemically defined preparations evaluated include both the hydrophilic and lipophilic constituents of Echinacea commonly associated with beneficial effects. The latest research indicates a new understanding of how echinacea functions in the body. Rather than stimulating the immune system, it acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, especially in echinacea's interaction with rhinoviruses.
