Speaker: Robert Rountree. This talk begins by addressing the questions: are we in the midst of an epidemic of mental illness and mood disorders? Or are we increasingly medicalizing and pathologizing what were previously considered normal physiological changes and behaviors? There is no easy answer, but it does help to look at the physiological paramerters of mental health, and to consider comprehensive, holistic strategies to support healthy brain function and emotional expression. Anything that disrupts neuronal mitochondrial activity can directly lead to disrupted neural transmission, resulting in disruption of emotional expression. These physiologic disruptions include instability of the neuronal membrane, cellular energy depletion, cytokine sickness syndrome and erratic or disrupted neural transmission. Useful nutrients for supporting healthy functioning of the nervous system are discussed, including marine oil and DHA for supporting healthy neuronal function, coenzyme Q10 and acyetul-L-Carnitine for supporting healthy mitochondrial function, and rhodiola, passionflower and St. Johns wort for modulating neural transmission, . Detailed references in the proceedings article on the topic support the conclusions of each section. A very comprehensive and detailed presentation.
