Speaker: Jillian Stansbury, ND There are no licensed drugs for those at risk for psychosis due to minor early symptoms or a familial predisposition, leaving a large arena where antioxidant herbs, nutrients, and fatty acids may be useful. Although the possible interventions available for individuals in the early stages of psychosis could be immense, the frequency of use is quite rare unless herbalists, nutritionists, or naturopathic physicians are consulted. Because schizophrenia is associated with oxidative stress in the brain, antioxidants herbs, nutrients, nootropics, and fatty acids may be helpful in preventing or slowing the progression of the disease. The side effects and contraindications of pharmaceuticals used in schizophrenia are also described.
