Speaker: Kerry Bone. Traditional concepts for aiding liver function with botanicals are presented. Ways in which botanicals can protect the liver, restore the liver after injury, stimulate the flow of bile and stimulate hepatic detoxification processes are summarized. The talk continues with a summary of the biotransformation processes of the liver in which toxic substances are rendered less toxic and are excreted in the bile or urine. Phase I and Phase II liver enzyme systems are described, and botanicals which can have a positive effect on both systems are discussed. Therapeutic agents such as schizandra, turmeric, milk thistle, rosemary, sage, garlic, green tea, cruciferous vegetables and garlic all have their place in aiding the liver- and research is presented to verify these claims.
